How to Dilute SMP Pigment: A Professional Guide

Dilution is one of the main tools professional SMP artists use to control the working strength of a concentrated pigment. The goal is not to force every client into one shade, but to create a mixture appropriate for the individual scalp and treatment plan.

Why Dilution Matters

A concentrated pigment can be adjusted to produce lighter or stronger working shades. This gives the artist more control over hairline softness, density work, scar camouflage, and session-to-session progression.

Start With the Client

Before selecting a working strength, evaluate natural follicle color, remaining hair, skin tone, treatment area, existing SMP, and the desired healed appearance.

Build Conservatively

Many artists prefer to build gradually rather than start too dark. A conservative first session gives room to reassess the healed result and add depth later if needed.

Use a Consistent System

Keep your mixing process repeatable. Record the pigment used, dilution approach, cartridge configuration, and session notes so you can make informed adjustments at follow-up visits.
